#COVID19 Data: Nightly update of the sick and the dead.
Since tracking and analyzing data is what I'm best known for...and since I'm mostly stuck sitting in front of the computer all day whether I like it or not these days anyway...I've started my own daily COVID-19 spreadsheet. I've added a big yellow banner at the top of the site which links to it.
Again, I'm not the one who compiled the data itself--many other teams with far better resources than I have are doing that--but I'm pulling their work together and adding some additional context, such as per capita info by state/territory.
I also include the partisan lean of every state, which may sound cynical or tasteless...unless you've been paying attention to the news of late. That's exactly how Donald Trump sees it; he's literally giving red states whatever resources they ask for (or more) while deliberately starving the blue states (or even some purple states if their governors aren't "nice" enough to him) or giving them scraps.
Nationally:
- 3.24 million Americans have been tested to date (nearly 1% of the population)
- Another 30,200 tested positive today
- 644,000 have tested positive, or roughly 20% of those tested
- Another 2,500 Americans died of COVID-19 today.
- Over 28,500 have died to date.
- U.S. mortality based on positive tests is up again to 4.4%...the death toll rate is rising faster than the testing rate.
- The U.S. death toll increased by 29% over the past 3 days.
New York:
- 526,000 New Yorkers have been tested (2.7% of the population)
- Another 11,500 New Yorkers tested positive today
- 215,000 New Yorkers have tested positive (1.1% of the population)
- Another 752 New Yorkers died of COVID-19 today. Nearly 11,600 have died to date.
- Nearly 0.6 per thousand New Yorkers have died of COVID-19.
Michigan (my home state):
- 90,000 Michiganders have been tested (0.9% of the population)
- Another 1,000 tested positive today. Over 28,000 Michiganders have now tested positive.
- Another 153 Michiganders died of COVID-19 today. Our death toll is now 1,921 people.
- Michigan continues to have the highest mortality* based on positive tests (6.9%).
- Michigan's death toll increased by 29% over the past 3 days.
*(except for the Northern Mariana Islands)
Other States/Territories:
I've downshifted my "3-day increase" threshold to 33%. That is, I'm listing states/territories which saw their confirmed cases or death tolls increase by 33% or higher. This is actually a "good" thing relatively speaking, since I had previously been listing those which doubled or increased by 50% or higher.
- South Dakota is the only state to once again see a 60% 3-day increase in positive cases.
- Death tolls increased by 33% or more over the past 3 days in:
- Wyoming
- Connecticut
- Idaho
- West Virginia
- Maryland
- North Carolina
- Massachusetts
- District of Columbia
- Ohio
- New Hampshire
- Pennsylvania
- New Mexico
- Virginia
- Rhode Island
- Missouri
- Kansas
- Texas
- New Jersey
- Tennessee
- Florida
There was also another one more military death, as well as 25 more confirmed cases within the Navajo Nation, five more of whom have died.
